Back to Grey Belt Main
Excerpts of text by Taeyoon Choi...

If you were to ask ‘What is the story of Grey Belt about?’, I will say “it is not about the plaza, or the chamber, nor the alley way, but a story of a waste land.” Someone next to me says “No. no. no. It’s the story of the secret jungle.” Another person will say without a moment of pause “Hey! you all got it wrong. This is a story of a funny green house, one which the climate is controlled and the soils are fertilized, but full of plastic tree.” ...

Another group of folks started whispering. “I will tell you why gravity disappeared from the Grey Belt.” So, this is the zero-gravity place, where people fly around? Another person said with a touch of sarcasm “No, they are actually projectiles that do not know its destination and purpose of their travel.’ Another person, who have been looking at the other two rather pathetically said ‘The falling things do not have wings to fly back up.’...

Fixing her makeup while looking at a small mirror, she said “I got my skin peeled off, It still looks burned.” I was thinking, 'She is slowly stuffing herself into taxidermy. Is she mummifying herself to stay beautiful forever?' Is your skin, flesh, body desiring the same dream? Are they dreaming the same desire? The one who wishes eternal beauty dives into a pool of formalin. Her surgery left large scars on the face. You wrapped put medicine and bandage on the scar many times until you forget about it. Is it fixed now? ...

The turtle said “Waiting is a painful torture. He forgot about our appointment. Or did he know, but erased the memory in purpose?” Another person is waiting at the promised location. For the land mine that was never activated, It’s time is still ticking.

In the grey belt, the place where gravity disappeared, can one see more clearly into the distance? Or is the view perplexed?

Regarding Grey...

The word 'Grey' is usually used to depict a specific color. Within the context of the project, we explore the idea of Grey as a specific psychological state, a political state, and an emotional state.

There are three kinds of Grey. One, it is Grey because it does not have life. Two, it is Grey because it does not have a color. Three, Grey because there is no light. Grey is often created not by intention, but because it was unavoidable. Color Grey is made by a fair mixture of two contradictory color. Between white and black, Grey is both but neither. That state is known as being 'neutral'. The idea of neutrality poses tricky questions, is it neutral because it can potentially be both? or because it really is neither?

Think of a Grey photograph or a Grey film. Is it underexposed or overexposed? Was there a subject of the photograph in the first place? Was the photograph ever taken? Or was it just never photographed, but exposed to the light, so there is no way of finding out. If you can not think further, let's shift gears and think of the Grey wall. Is it a concrete or cement wall? Or a paper wall? What is between two great Grey walls, the zone known as the Grey Belt?

Among all of the Greys, the one of ignorance is the most insolent and dangerous one. Apathy, which is the mother of all ignorance, is the most destructive factor. Self centered, individualistic thinking makes the landscape all Grey, thus shortens one's foresight. Grey is full of conflicts. Black and white both claim that the zone belongs to them.

There is a reason why the word 'neutrality' has a bad reputation. It is a luxurious state of indecision. What a plentiful idea it is, to not have to decide? On the other hand, an empty promise is very Grey as well. A promise that was not realized, only existing as a potentiality in the word 'hope'.

////////The demilitarized zone, also know as the <Grey Belt> is considered one of the world's purest natural site. The area is secretly inhabited by mechanical- mutant animal and abandoned war machine, and also thee exiled and refugee. Everything floats, because there is no gravity.
