아주 부유한 사람의 집에 초대된 적이 있다. 그의 저택은 아름다운 물건과 맛있는 음식들로 가득 찼다. 그는 자신의 소유물을 아주 자랑스럽게 생각했다. 그 중 근래에 새로 사들인 물건들, 그가 ‘미래 지향적인 투자’ 라고 부르는 물건들에 대해서 기쁘게 생각했다. 그것들을 위해 방 하나가 사용되었다. 거기에는 크고 아름다운 그림들이 고풍스러운 나무 액자에 걸려 있었고, 어두운 방에 조명이 비추고 있었다. 그 그림들은 전반적으로 추상적이지만, 부분적으로는 구체적인 묘사가 되어 있었다. 그 그림들은 보는 사람을 현혹했다. 그것들은 소재에 대해서 많은 정보를 노출하지 않으면서, 보는 사람이 그림을 통해서 보고자 하는 가치를 투사했다. 그 그림들이 흥미로워서, 무엇에 대한 그림인지 그에게 물어봤다. 그는 질문받은 사실을 반기며, 하나씩 상세히 설명했다.
Story of a rich man's posession
I was once invited by a very rich man to his grand mansion, which was full of beautiful things to see, and plenty of fine food to eat. He was very proud of his collections. He was especially enchanted about the recent acquisition, some ‘prospective investments’ as he called it. One room was entirely dedicated to his new possessions. The room was decorated with large and gorgeous paintings that were framed by antique wood, which hung on the wall under dim lights. The paintings were generally abstract, yet very illustrative at certain parts. They were definitely deceptive. They did not reveal much information about its subjects, but projected it’s value as desired by the viewer. Intrigued by these paintings, I asked him what they represent. He was glad to be asked, and explained to me every one of them in detail.
